It is believed that the Barrio de Las Cuevas dates back to the 16th Century, when local people began to carve out dwellings in the rock faces. There are over 2,000 cave houses in this area, making it the largest cave complex in Europe, and now it is a neighbourhood inhabited by families and artisans. Printed maps guide visitors around this historic ‘village’ as part of an exploration of wider, historic Guadix.
This particular cave was initially built in 1888, according to official cadastral records, but it has recently been fully restored to provide a family home of some 165 m2.
Entrance to the property is through a gate into a large patio or parking area, although there is a separate door to a spacious garage.
The main front door to the cave leads into a reception hall/salon. There is a hobbit-like quality to the design of the interiors, with circular openings into rooms and the cave filters deeper into the rock.
The kitchen has a wood-burning stove and access to one of the bathrooms.
The are 5 bedrooms in total, although one of these is only accessible through another bedroom.
From the front patio, there is another door that opens into a large family room with another kitchen area - a great space for get-togethers and entertaining. Part of this area can be used for storage. Second shower room.
Large garage.
A metal staircase leads up to a roof terrace.
As a lock-up-and-go, unusual holiday home, this presents an interesting option. As an investment property for holiday rentals, it would also be a sound choice as this is such a popular destination on tourism routes.
