In a very quiet residential corner of La Zubia, tucked behind imposing iron gates and up a private driveway sits this time-capsule of a house. Everything about this property, concealed by mature trees and shrubs in a glorious garden, is charming. The interior spaces are a beautifully preserved reminder of a time gone by: the house was built in 1937 and the original features throughout are in remarkable condition. It would almost be sacrilegious to tinker too much with these interior spaces, but there is an opportunity to create something very exciting outside.
Our thought is to do the minimal amount of interior refreshment inside the original house, leaving 2 or 3 reception rooms with their beautifully tiled floors, a traditional style kitchen and perhaps a cloakroom. However, at the rear of the property there exists an outbuilding and area that used to house the chickens, and it would be possible to build an unapologetically modern, yet discreet, single-storey pavilion with 3 amazing bedrooms and 2 or 3 bathrooms, with large windows and simple lines and spaces that open onto the oasis-like garden and pool terrace.
All that said, the original house is in great structural condition and can be lived in immediately.
The property is on one floor and there are currently 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room with original tiled fireplace and a very traditional kitchen.
At the rear of the house, there is a large patio with a two-room outbuilding.
At the bottom of the garden, there is another separate two-room outbuilding that would make a fabulous guest house with bedroom and bathroom or a studio/workshop.
Entering the garden through the iron gates is like stepping into a different world, far removed from the hustle of central La Zubia. Gentle tiers follow the terrain up to the house, and there is an elegant driveway and a flight of steps up to a front terrace.
To one side of the house, there is another pergola-covered terrace and a raised pool terrace - everything is incredibly private and shaded.
At the rear, as mentioned, there is a small paddock that had been used for chickens and it is this area that could be built on to create a very exciting extension to the original house.
If the idea of juxtaposing a beautifully preserved 90 year old villa with something unashamedly new, then we can recommend the ideal Granada-based architect who can help you realise something special.
La Zubia is a very popular and attractive municipality on the edge of Granada city but with its own very distinct identity and proud character. Transport links to and from the city are good, and the Metro is due to be extended here. The area has its own complete infrastructure with sports and leisure facilities, schools, shops and medical centres. Slightly further out of town and you can visit the huge Nevada Shopping centre, and the Parque Tecnológico de la Salud de Granada is only 5 minutes’ drive away.
The Sierra Nevada ski resort is 40 minutes away by car, and the beaches of the Costa Tropical can be reached in 50 minutes.
LOCATION
The BBC One programme, ‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ was filmed across Andalucia throughout the summer of 2024. Amanda Holden and Alan Carr bought an abandoned village house in Moclín through Granada Village & Country, and the historic village was the main focus for the programme, following Alan and Amanda’s progress as they restored the property.
‘Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job’ was first shown on BBC One from 24th January 2025 and is available on iPlayer.
