If you like the idea of finishing the interiors of an elegant town house within easy reach of the coast, and without the need for major structural work, then this could be the property for you. The house is very well-proportioned and has lovely high ceilings throughout, so it really needs no internal rearrangement. It needs to be rewired, replumbed, have kitchen and bathrooms installed and then the whole interior redecorated. As ever, many of these projects look daunting, but some of the work has been started and it is more of a superficial refurbishment than major reconstruction.

Built in 1943, this used to be the home of the village doctor and reflects the status of the former owner. It is located in a very quiet residential street just up from the lovely church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario in the historic quarter. Vélez Castle sits just above the house and the beautiful Jardin Nazarí is a short walk away.

The double front doors open into an elegant and spacious reception hall, and there are two large reception rooms, each one on either side of the hallway, and one of which has the original tiled floor. From an inner hall, the stairs lead up to the first floor. Towards the rear of the hall, there are doors onto the patio garden and a side hallway leads to the dining room (with lovely tiled floor) kitchen and a spacious storage room which could now be used as an office, perhaps.

On the first floor, there are 4 large bedrooms and two bathrooms. One of the bedrooms gives access to two of the other bedrooms, so this might be more practically used as a first floor sitting room. 2 bathrooms. As mentioned previously, the kitchen and bathrooms all need to be refitted.

A door from the landing opens onto the roof terrace; a generous space with great views of the mountains beyond Vélez de Benaudalla.

The ground floor patio contains a spacious outbuilding. The current owner was going to open up half of this building to create a covered outside dining area, but where are many options for this room, including another bedroom. There is space in the patio for a small plunge pool.

Vélez de Benaudalla is a bustling small town (population 2,980) that has a great deal of traditional character and all the amenities that might be needed. Bars, small shops, bakeries, greengrocers, banks etc., are all here and there are the usual major supermarkets in nearby Motril.

Although Vélez is a traditional inland market town with a thriving art, culture and history scene, it has the major advantage of being just a short drive from the beautiful Costa Tropical. Playa de Granada is only 20 minutes’ drive from the house. In the other direction, you can reach the ski resort in the Sierra Nevada in just over an hour, and the centre of Granada in 40 minutes. Málaga Airport can be reached in 1 hour and 10 minutes, and the centre of Motril in 20 minutes.

If you are looking for a home close to the coast, a potential bed & breakfast or a self-catering rental property, then this would be an ideal house.
